Fødselsdagen, Carl!

Yesterday marked the 148th birthday of Danish composer Carl Nielsen, a favorite over here at the New York Philharmonic as evidenced by The Nielsen Project multi-season survey of the six symphonies and three concertos by a composer who, in Alan Gilbert’s words, reflects a “kind of universal human experience” in his music. You can delve further into The Nielsen Project here, or listen above to the first of our recording installations as part of the project, which features Nielsen’s Symphonies Nos. 3 and 2. Released last fall on Dacapo, it was praised by The New York Times for its “pulsing and insightful accounts” of the two works.

Here’s a little primer for the brand new ‘The Soviet Experience Vol. 3’ — Volumes 1 & 2.

2013 will mark Giuseppe Verdi’s 200th birthday, and what better way to celebrate than with this playlist of some of our favorite selections. Enjoy performances from Dmitri Hvorostovsky & Sondra Radvanovsky, as well as the Chicago Symphony Chorus.  If this doesn’t meet your need for a Verdi fix, there is also the new Tutto Verdi Project from C Major, which includes the 26 complete operas on DVD or Blu-ray.

Happy listening!
